Eliza McLamb Gets Off On "Suffering"

Indie-rock singer-songwriter Eliza McLamb unveils a new song from her upcoming sophomore record Good Story, set for release October 24th via Royal Mountain Records. 'Suffering' is another example proving the new record is poised to cement McLamb as one of the next best voices in indie rock. Good Story is a masterclass in balancing guitar-laced instrumentals with lyrics doused in a clever observational wit.

'Suffering' is a wry, self-effacing track about one’s tendency to hold their wounds close. It begins with a feint, baroque piano intro over which McLamb slyly repurposes people’s perceptions of her from the Going Through It era — she goes from a “poor maudlin child” to singing about getting off on suffering over giant, scuzzy guitars.

About the song McLamb reflected, “I came to see suffering as a creative act — something I often wanted to feel and thus created situations where it was possible. I realized my own role in manufacturing pain, and I wanted to play with the idea of suffering as something I sometimes chose as a willing experience.”

'Suffering' follows early album-tastes, 'Every Year' and 'Like The Boys,' along with standalone single 'Quitting,' a tongue-in-cheek, pulsing guitar track. Produced by Sarah Tudzin, Good Story was recorded with a stacked legion of musicians including Jacob Blizard (Lucy Dacus) on guitar, Jason McGerr of Death Cab for Cutie on drums, and Sarah Goldstone (Chappell Roan, Boygenius) on keys.
